The article portrays Bodegas La Horra, designed by Carme Pinós, as a winery where architecture becomes a direct dialogue with the Ribera del Duero landscape.
It explains the background of the commission: after setting a production cap in Rioja to maintain full quality control, the RODA group sought a new Tempranillo territory and found it in La Horra, a site defined by complex topography and geological formations.
Pinós places the building mid-slope and designs it as a partly buried structure to ensure a stable interior temperature. Natural ventilation is reinforced through zarceras—traditional winery chimneys—reinterpreted here as sculptural elements emerging above the terrain. A large concrete roof, described as a giant “tile” driven into the hillside, is paired with green roofs to extend the ground plane over the architecture and strengthen its landscape integration.
The programme balances an efficient production machine with spaces intended to welcome wine-cultural tourism. A monumental entrance serves both visitors and logistics, while local-stone gabions continue the colour and texture of the site. On the south façade, the envelope alternates glazing and handmade brickwork. The visitor area is conceived as a generous, adaptable social hall, where robust brick mullions deliberately fragment views. I
n the technical levels, carefully crafted concrete— including reed formwork textures—creates a restrained, monastic atmosphere, enhanced by daylight drawn in through zarceras and skylights. The project’s final layer is the planned vegetation that will gradually cover roofs and terraces.
